Design + Leadership Awards

AIA POTOMAC VALLEY CELEBRATES INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY AT 2026 DESIGN + LEADERSHIP AWARDS

AIA Potomac Valley hosted its 2026 Design + Leadership Awards on October 22, celebrating architectural excellence in the Potomac Valley region. The annual celebratory event, held at the College Park Aviation Airport Operations Center, honored outstanding architectural teams, their clients, and consultants who collaborated to enhance the built environment. The awards not only showcased the depth of services architects provide but also highlighted the role of architecture in shaping the quality of life through design.

The Edgemoor House II, designed by Anne Decker Architects, received the Gold Award as the "Best in Show" residential project at the celebration as well as an Honor Award. Additionally, Modern Cottage, designed by Fowlkes Studio, received the prestigious PV Award by the jury for best exemplifying elements of AIA’s Framework for Design Excellence. The project also received a Merit Award.

Overall, 11 projects received awards for design excellence, from a total of 41 submissions. The entries were evaluated blindly by a jury of accomplished architects from Seattle, WA headed by Marlon M. Blackwell, FAIA, Founding Partner + Design Director, Marlon Blackwell Architects. 2026 NAPKIN SKETCH CONTEST WINNERS

The Napkin Sketch Contest is an AIA Potomac Valley design awards ceremony tradition. This year’s attendees were asked to sketch to the theme, “Reimagine the Perfect Coffee Cup for the Architect on a Deadline.”

Entries were judged blindly by AIA Potomac Valley volunteer leaders, and 1st and 2nd place winners were announced during the awards ceremony. First prize was claimed by Tom Nyein, AIA (top left) and Larry Frank (top right) took second prize. Thanks to all who participated in the annual contest!

Advocacy Update and the Maryland Architects PAC

What’s ahead in Annapolis
The 2027 General Assembly session opens in January, and AIA Maryland is going in with two priorities: modernizing the Architects’ Act, and securing a long-term extension for the Maryland State Board of Architects ahead of its 2028 sunset. We are building on this year’s win, SB 653/HB 1180, which took effect October 1 and gives the Board new tools to protect the integrity of your license. Our lobbyist, Sherry Nickerson of SDN Consulting, will give the full picture at the Legislative Wrap-Up at Future Forward on November 4.

Want a seat at the table?
AIA Maryland is putting forward names for appointments to design review boards and to the Maryland State Board of Architects. Are you interested? With a new class of elected officials taking office after the November election, we are also looking for members who want to serve on transition teams. If either is something you would like to be considered for, fill out our short interest form.

Maryland State Board of Architects: licenses and regulates architects, investigates complaints and writes the rules that govern practice. Seven members, five of them architects, appointed by the Governor.

Design review boards: local panels that review proposed buildings for design quality, neighborhood fit and historic standards before approval.

Transition teams: advisory groups that help newly elected officials set priorities, policies and appointments for their first months in office.

Membership Dues Payment Plan is Now Open

More flexibility is coming to installment payments. The six-month installment program opened October 1 and is available through April 30. 

Renewing, new, and rejoining Architect, Associate, International Associate, and National Allied members are eligible to participate in the Membership Dues Payment Plan (“Payment Plan”).

This year, members can enroll using either electronic checks or credit cards, providing greater flexibility when spreading out dues payments. For questions regarding membership or eligibility, contact AIA Member Support at (800) 242 3837, option 2.

Architecture Billings Decline Further Amid Weak Market Conditions

The September AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index^® (ABI) score of 44.7 signals further weakening from August. Firm backlogs averaged 6.2 months at the end of the third quarter, down from 6.6 months at the end of the first quarter. Regionally, billings remained soft in the Northeast and South and were flat in the West and Midwest. Firms reported that their 2026 revenue is down an average of 3% from 2025 and expect revenue to remain flat in 2027. AIA members can access the full ABI report for free.

Public Comment Period Open: Proposed Revisions to the AIA Continuing Education Program Standards

Proposed revisions to the AIA Standards for Continuing Education Programs are open for public comment through Nov. 30. The AIA Continuing Education Committee is asking for public comment on proposed revisions to the AIA Standards for Continuing Education Programs. The revisions are part of the broader 2027 update. The goal is to make the Standards clearer and easier to use while keeping the safeguards that make AIA continuing education credible. 

Stakeholders are invited to review the draft changes and share feedback.
