LICENSING IN MARYLAND

Each State/jurisdiction sets its own requirements for the initial registration, examination and practice of architecture. For all information pertaining to architectural licensing in Maryland, visit the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing – Maryland State Board of Architects.

Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) for Maryland Licensed Architects
On October 1, 2003, Maryland became the 28th state to require mandatory continuing education for renewal or reinstatement of an architect’s license.

To qualify for renewal, a licensee must complete 24 continuing education contact hours per 24-month period since the last renewal of a license, all of which must be related to the protection of the health, safety, and welfare (HSW) of the general public. (Continuing Professional Competency Requirements – Maryland Board of Architects)
[Note: AIA members are required annually to complete 18 Learning Units (LU) from registered AIA/CES providers, of which 12 LUs must address health, safety, and welfare topics (HSW).]

When you renew, you will be asked to certify that you have complied with the continuing education requirements. Certificates of completion and other forms of proof of attendance do not have to be sent to the Board. Licensees must retain those documents for two years in case of audit.

The offices of the Maryland Board of Architects are open and serving customers through its online licensing resources, via e-mail and telephone, and by limited in-person appointments. Please note, walk-in assistance is not available. The Board can be reached using its contacts page for e-mail addresses and telephone numbers of individual staff members or Schedule an Appointment.

Any course or activity approved by the American Institute of Architects, or the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, is considered to be a pre-approved course or activity. A course or activity not approved by AIA or NCARB may be given approval by the Board if the licensee seeking approval of the course or activity submits a written request to the Board at least 30 calendar days in advance of the program.

Renewing architects should download the CPC Reporting Form (Word) for use in maintaining your records. The records must be maintained for at least two years from the date of completion of the qualifying program. Licensees are subject to a random audit of LUs completed during each license term. The reporting requirements are described in Section .07 of the regulations.
