VOLUNTEER LEADERS CHART a Bold Path Forward at 2026 Strategic Retreat
On Saturday, February 7, AIA Potomac Valley’s volunteer leaders gathered at KTL Solutions, Inc. in Frederick, MD for a focused and forward-thinking strategic retreat—an opportunity to step back, reflect, and chart a bold course for the year ahead.
Guided by AIAPV President Emily Lally, AIA, NCARB, CPHC (Studio Lally LLC) and President-Elect Caitlin Smith, AIA (Torti Gallas + Partners), the Board embraced an “inward, outward, and upward” approach to planning. This framework encouraged thoughtful reflection on our chapter’s internal strengths and challenges, an assessment of the external forces shaping the profession, and an aspirational look at how AIAPV can lead with vision and impact.
Throughout the day, Board members revisited AIAPV’s mission and vision, identified emerging opportunities, and developed strategies to ensure we continue delivering meaningful value to our members. With the architecture profession navigating economic uncertainty, technological change, and evolving community needs, the retreat focused on how the chapter can support our members and the broader industry through these challenges.
The conversations were candid. The ideas were creative. The energy in the room was unmistakable. Most importantly, the commitment to service and leadership was clear. Our volunteer leaders are deeply invested in strengthening professional connections, expanding learning opportunities, advancing advocacy efforts, and fostering a vibrant architectural community throughout the Potomac Valley.

AIA Leadership Summit
AIA Potomac Valley Leaders Learn, Share, and Influence at the 2026 AIA Leadership Summit
Leaders, staff, and members from AIA Potomac Valley joined colleagues from across Maryland and around the globe in Washington, DC, February 11–14, 2026, for the AIA Leadership Summit. The Summit is the premier advocacy and leadership training event for AIA chapter leaders—offering a powerful platform to sharpen leadership skills, strengthen association management practices, and engage directly with policymakers.
Throughout the four-day event, our delegation focused on aligning leadership and advocacy for greater impact—ensuring that the voice of architects in the Potomac Valley is heard clearly and effectively at the national level.
Highlights from This Year’s Summit
A Transformative Keynote
Futurist and author April Rinne delivered a compelling keynote based on her book Flux, introducing the “Flux Mindset.” Her message challenged leaders to embrace change, rethink traditional definitions of success, and transform uncertainty into opportunity, growth, and innovation.
Capitol Hill Advocacy
One of the Summit’s most impactful components was direct engagement with members of Congress. AIA Potomac Valley leaders participated in Capitol Hill visits, advocating on issues critical to the architecture profession, our members, and the communities we serve. These conversations reinforced the importance of architects as essential voices in shaping policies related to education and careers, preservation, the built environment, sustainability, housing, infrastructure, and economic development.
Excellence in Board Leadership
Executive directors, presidents, and presidents-elect participated in a focused half-day session on governance and strategy. This intensive workshop emphasized best practices in board leadership, succession planning, strategic alignment, and performance excellence—strengthening the foundation for chapter success.

Flint Hill inherits the undulating foothills, clear skies, and sprawling vistas of Rappahannock County. Our client’s agenda: a sustainably-minded house with living and sleeping wings, vegetable and flower gardens, a year-round pool, a bocce court, and a carport, located strategically within the sixty-four acre site. The house borrows forms from local farm outbuildings, and comprises two wings that capture light and breeze, follow the topography and share views of the adjacent meadows and distant mountains.

February 25, 4:00 – 5:20 PM
College Park, MD | 1 LU/HSW | REGISTER
This KEA Distinguished Professor Lecture is part of the UMD Spring 2026 Architecture Lecture series.
In "Seeking Abundance," architecture is presented as a tool for advancing balance between human and ecological systems at a time of accelerating climate, social, and cultural crises. It frames abundance not as excess, but as a condition of equilibrium—where communities have enough to flourish while operating within planetary limits. Drawing on MASS Design Group’s work across geographies and scales, it examines how design decisions shape health, dignity, biodiversity, and resilience. Emphasis is placed on material provenance, landscape systems, and long-term stewardship, arguing that architecture must move beyond minimizing harm toward regenerative practices that support collective wellbeing and a flourishing planet.

AZIZA CHAOUNI: "Designing with Scarcity in Africa"
April 8, 4:00 – 5:20 PM
College Park, MD | 1 LU/HSW | REGISTER
This Craig and Mimi Spangler Lecture is part of the UMD Spring 2026 Architecture Lecture series.
This lecture explores how scarcity—of materials, infrastructure, energy, and capital—can become a generative force for architectural innovation in Africa. Drawing on built work, research, and post-crisis interventions across the continent, Prof. Aziza Chaouni reframes constraint as a catalyst for climate-responsive design, social equity, and cultural continuity. The talk examines low-carbon construction, bio-sourced materials, adaptive reuse, and participatory processes that leverage local knowledge and crafts. Rather than importing extractive models, the lecture argues for context-driven design methodologies that transform scarcity into resilience, affordability, and long-term environmental stewardship.
