BADEN BRANCH LIBRARY
Grimm + Parker Architects
Brandywine, MD
More design excellence worth celebrating! We’re spotlighting Grimm + Parker Architects for their impressive design of their Baden Branch Library project in Brandywine, MD—recognized by the jury with a Commendation Award in AIAPV’s 2025 Excellence in Design Awards.

A little library, housed inside a school for decades, waited for an opportunity to expand. Finally, Baden Branch Library moved next door and transformed an abandoned clinic into a vibrant and colorful library, doubling its size. Inspired by the apple orchards, the design exceeded everyone’s expectations through uses of colors and patterns—offering a welcoming, sustainable space for all ages. One community member said, “even though this is small, it is huge for us!”

JURY: “In transforming an abandoned health clinic, the architects proposed an interior adaptive reuse inspired by regional apple orchards. The design is colorful in both expression and use, offering unscripted zones that support multiple functions beyond the prescribed program. It is a cheerful and imaginative proposal, best captured by a community member’s reflection: “Even though this is small, it is huge for us.” The Jury wholeheartedly agrees.”

how authors shape early design literacy
In the first article of a three-part series, Lori Apfel Cardeli, AIA, NCARB explored why children’s books have become such an effective tool for K–12 architecture outreach: They make the profession visible, lower barriers to entry, and invite curiosity about the built environment long before career decisions are on the table. As that work expanded, other questions naturally emerged: Who is writing these books, and why does listening to them matter?
Lori's second article features conversations with children’s book authors and illustrators whose stories introduce architecture through imagination and everyday places, helping young readers see that the built environment is shaped by people—and that their ideas matter.
Stay tuned for the final article in the series, coming soon, which will offer classroom-ready book and activity pairings for Architecture Week, school visits, and outreach programs.
Lori Apfel Cardeli is the principal of LACArch, a residential architecture practice based in Bethesda, MD. She is the Maryland state representative for AIA’s Small Firm Exchange and is deeply engaged in K–12 architecture education through school visits, book drives, and her ongoing project, LACArch’s Little Book Club (@LACArchLittleBookClub).

WHAT ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE
By Jonathan C. Shoemaker, Esq. | Lee/Shoemaker PLLC
For many architecture and engineering firms, professional liability insurance is viewed as a necessary but opaque expense—something to renew annually, negotiate primarily on price, and hope is never needed. From a legal perspective, that mindset leaves firms exposed in ways they often do not discover until a dispute is already underway. There are several misconceptions about professional liability insurance which result in architects and engineers failing to receive the full value of the policies they purchase.
Misconception #1: Reporting Potential Problems Will Hurt You at Renewal
Many design professionals hesitate to report a claim—or even a potential claim—to their professional liability carrier, fearing that the act of reporting will result in increased premiums at renewal. From an underwriting standpoint, this fear is often misplaced. Professional liability insurance for design firms is underwritten based on firm size, project types, risk management profile, and their claims history/loss ratio. Reporting a potential issue that never matures into an actual claim does not, by itself, negatively change that calculus. Moreover, firms that notify their carriers of potential issues before they become claims are often seen as better proactive (rather than reactive) risk managers.
The real risk lies in failing to report claims or potential claims in a timely manner. Failure to provide timely notice can give rise to coverage defenses, allowing the carrier to deny coverage entirely if a small issue later turns into a significant claim. For most design professionals, this represents a far more acute exposure than any speculative concern about future premiums.

February 25, 4:00 – 5:20 PM (NEW DATE)
College Park, MD | 1 LU/HSW | REGISTER
This KEA Distinguished Professor Lecture is part of the UMD Spring 2026 Architecture Lecture series.
In "Seeking Abundance," architecture is presented as a tool for advancing balance between human and ecological systems at a time of accelerating climate, social, and cultural crises. It frames abundance not as excess, but as a condition of equilibrium—where communities have enough to flourish while operating within planetary limits. Drawing on MASS Design Group’s work across geographies and scales, it examines how design decisions shape health, dignity, biodiversity, and resilience. Emphasis is placed on material provenance, landscape systems, and long-term stewardship, arguing that architecture must move beyond minimizing harm toward regenerative practices that support collective wellbeing and a flourishing planet.

AZIZA CHAOUNI: "Designing with Scarcity in Africa"
April 8, 4:00 – 5:20 PM
College Park, MD | 1 LU/HSW | REGISTER
This Craig and Mimi Spangler Lecture is part of the UMD Spring 2026 Architecture Lecture series.
This lecture explores how scarcity—of materials, infrastructure, energy, and capital—can become a generative force for architectural innovation in Africa. Drawing on built work, research, and post-crisis interventions across the continent, Prof. Aziza Chaouni reframes constraint as a catalyst for climate-responsive design, social equity, and cultural continuity. The talk examines low-carbon construction, bio-sourced materials, adaptive reuse, and participatory processes that leverage local knowledge and crafts. Rather than importing extractive models, the lecture argues for context-driven design methodologies that transform scarcity into resilience, affordability, and long-term environmental stewardship.
