Building Connections Through Residential Design: Spotlight on AIAPV’s CRAN Committee

CRAN® serves as a leading resource and voice for architects focused on collaborative residential design with homeowners, supporting advocacy, education, and professional development within the custom residential sector.

The AIA Potomac Valley CRAN (Custom Residential Architects Network) Committee continues to strengthen the region’s residential design community through meaningful educational programs, networking opportunities, and mentorship initiatives. In April 2026, AIAPV’s CRAN Committee hosted two highly successful programs that showcased both the technical and human sides of residential practice—highlighting craftsmanship, interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship, and professional growth.

From Site to Finish: Integrated Design and Construction in Custom Residential Architecture

Held on April 17, this immersive construction tour provided over 40 attendees with a behind-the-scenes look at a custom home nearing completion and demonstrated the level of coordination required to deliver high-quality residential architecture. Led by architect Richard Leggin, AIA of Richard Leggin Architects, landscape architect Guy Williams of DCA Landscape Architects, and builder John Thorsen of Thorsen Construction, the program explored how architects, builders, landscape architects, and craftspeople work together to translate design concepts into durable, high-performing homes.

Participants examined stormwater management strategies, waterproofing methods, construction assemblies, and finish detailing while discussing how material selection and integrated site design contribute to both long-term building performance and occupant well-being. The event also reinforced the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in achieving thoughtful, resilient residential environments that prioritize health, safety, and welfare.

The event reflected the core mission of CRAN by blending technical education with real-world application and showcasing the collaborative spirit that defines successful custom residential practice.

Home Grown: A Residential Architecture Mentorship Series

On April 30, AIAPV and Capital Area CRAN hosted “Home Grown: A Residential Architecture Mentorship Series” at the beautiful new showroom of American Cedar & Millwork in Rockville, Maryland. The interactive event focused on connecting emerging professionals with experienced residential practitioners through a series of rapid, mentor-driven conversations designed to encourage learning, dialogue, and relationship building.

In addition to showcasing the latest residential products and trends, the program explored career pathways within residential architecture, practice management, sustainable materials, energy-efficient design strategies, and the collaborative nature of custom residential projects. Participants discussed how architects work closely with clients, consultants, and communities to deliver thoughtful and resilient homes while advocating for the value of architects in shaping healthier and more livable communities.

The evening also emphasized mentorship and community-building as essential tools for strengthening the future of the profession. Beginning with an open networking session, the event encouraged continued dialogue across generations of architects and highlighted the importance of supporting emerging professionals as they navigate the challenges and opportunities of residential practice.

Strengthening the Residential Design Community

Together, these two programs demonstrated the breadth and impact of AIAPV’s CRAN Committee—from technical education and construction best practices to mentorship and professional development. By creating opportunities for architects to learn from one another, engage with allied professionals, and build lasting relationships, the committee continues to foster a vibrant residential design community throughout the region.

AIA Potomac Valley’s CRAN Committee is part of the broader Capital Area CRAN partnership—a collaborative effort between AIA Potomac Valley, AIA DC, and AIA Northern Virginia—the committee provides architects and emerging professionals with valuable opportunities to explore the evolving world of custom residential architecture while fostering collaboration across disciplines. Through rotating monthly programs, tours, and networking events, the Capital Area CRAN initiative creates a dynamic platform for architects to exchange ideas, build relationships, and advance design excellence across the region.

AIAPV’s CRAN Committee welcomes volunteers and participants interested in shaping future programming for the residential design community.

The AIAPV CRAN Committee meets on the 2nd Wednesday bi-monthly in February, April, June, August, October & December at 1:00 PM via Zoom.
