GOLD AWARD
Recognizing “Best in Show” – Residential

GOLD / Residential
PROJECT  House in a Clearing
LOCATION  Owings Mills, Maryland
ARCHITECT  McInturff Architects
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN TEAM  Mark McInturff, FAIA, Jeffrey McInturff
OWNER/CLIENT  Confidential
CONTRACTOR  Design Alternatives, Inc. / Mike Bowers
PHOTOGRAPHER  Julia Heine; Jeff McInturff

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
On a gently sloping clearing, this live/work house is a filter through which the site flows, while orientation controls seasonal sun entering the transparent structure. East and west, masonry walls bookend the long glass facades, creating a platform open above and below to the woods beyond. Living spaces, pared to essentials, occupy one end of the platform. A bedroom suite occupies the other. Between, a masonry core contains bathrooms, stairs and services. The result is full of nature and natural light, mixing work and life, with no commute, in a clear minimal style.

JURY
“We admired the rigor and discipline of the design. It uses modest, industrial materials in an authentic way. This is unabashed immersion in nature.”

GOLD AWARD

Recognizing “Best in Show” – Non-Residential

GOLD / Institutional Architecture
PROJECT  St. Michaels Community Center
LOCATION  St. Michaels, Maryland
ARCHITECT  McInturff Architects
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN TEAM  Mark McInturff, FAIA, Christopher Boyd, AIA, Jeffrey McInturff, Julia Jeffs
OWNER/CLIENT  St. Michaels Community Center
CONTRACTOR  Harper & Sons, Inc. / Ron Markey, Project Manager | Kevin Jans, Project Manager | Robert Shaffer, Superintendent
PHOTOGRAPHER  Julia Heine

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The St. Michaels Community Center, founded in 1990, never had a permanent home. With this adaptive reuse of a World War II era lumber warehouse, they finally have dignified facilities that support their goals of assisting a socially, ethnically and economically diverse population in achieving greater economic security and personal development. Structurally, the building is a basilica; the new walls required for the program slid easily within the form. The only added space is a suite of offices on a new upper level, popping up through the roof and freeing the entire main level for programming.

JURY
“We applaud the respect for and elevation of this humble community building. The owner's mission of serving the community was absolutely reflected in the architecture. The modest materials are elegantly detailed in a graceful way and it makes a beautiful neighbor to the historic church.”

The architectural expression is contemporary, but wrought in traditional materials, looking forward with respect for the local history.

JURY

HONOR AWARD

HONOR
PROJECT  1238 Wisconsin
LOCATION  Washington, District of Columbia
ARCHITECT  McInturff Architects
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN TEAM  Mark McInturff, FAIA, Peter Noonan, FAIA, David Mogensen, AIA
OWNER/CLIENT  EastBanc Inc. | Anthony Lanier
CONTRACTOR  James G. Davis Construction Corp. | Tom Gnecco
PHOTOGRAPHER  Julia Heine; Anice Hoachlander

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Components of city making — retail, commercial and residential, inhabit this complex of historic buildings and new additions, on a prominent Georgetown corner. Significant frontage on two streets and a highly visible alley create three facades, all different, informed by context. Street level shopfronts were renovated, and new ones added. A street level lobby serves both offices and residential units. All upper levels have generous daylight and terraces for all tenants. Offices interiors of old brick and wood and generous common spaces successfully inspired a return to the post-COVID office.

JURY
“This project expertly weaves old and new together, generously accommodates a mix of uses, and allows the texture of existing materials to make cozy interiors. This is a complex puzzle of program that feels well resolved. The modern insertion feels comfortable in the surrounding context and elevates the existing historic fabric.”

PROJECT  Historic Shaw Rowhouse
LOCATION  Washington, District of Columbia
ARCHITECT  Hill and Hurtt Architects
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN TEAM  Joshua O. Hill, AIA LEED AP; Eric B. Hurtt, AIA; Mary-Margaret Stacy, AIA
OWNER/CLIENT  Confidential
CONTRACTOR  Buffalo Company / Cem Sevin
PHOTOGRAPHER  Stacy Zarin Goldberg

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
For the renovation of this rowhouse in DC’s Shaw Historic District, an architectural language was developed, consistent with the home’s history. Throughout the house, the strategic use of pilasters and beams, large cased openings, and focal points such as the salvaged and restored fireplaces and other architectural details provides clear definition to each room while creating connectivity and continuity throughout the space. At the exterior, an appropriately scaled garden facade was designed to relate to the new terrace and garden.

JURY
“A thoughtful, respectful transformation of an historic property. The resulting interiors are light-filled and generous. It seems like there was a close relationship between architect and client.”

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD

SPECIAL RECOGNITION (Fine Detailing)
PROJECT  Fire Temple Prayer Room
LOCATION
 Boyds, Maryland
ARCHITECT  Knu Design, LLC
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN TEAM  Scott Knudson, AIA, Principal; Chris O'Brien, Project Manager
OWNER/CLIENT  Zoroastrian Association of Metropolitan Washington, Inc. (ZAMWI)
PHOTOGRAPHER  Prakash Patel

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A place apart with a serene and reverent atmosphere, this design seamlessly integrates historical symbolism with a modern perspective. Minimal interventions in a formerly bland, aimless space created subtly choreographed experiences, beginning with a tripartite entry enfilade encouraging spiritual and bodily preparation. A variably-translucent glass wall encloses the main space’s three overlapping zones of increasing sanctity. Natural materials honor ancient traditions while reflecting the vibrant presence of this temple’s members in the Potomac Valley community.

JURY
“This project celebrates the connection between faith, ritual and design all within one room. We particularly appreciate the fine detailing of the wood screen.”

SPECIAL RECOGNITION (Fine Detailing)

The Max Robinson Center is a LEED Gold, 116,000 gsf facility, located in Ward 8, as the newest addition to the Whitman-Walker health care system.

JURY
“For this project, we recognized the rigor and elegant proportions of the red brick exterior.”

SPECIAL RECOGNITION (Adaptive Reuse)

PROJECT  Farm to Table
LOCATION
Fauquier County, Virginia
ARCHITECT  McInturff Architects
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN TEAM
Mark McInturff, FAIA, Peter Noonan, AIA
OWNER/CLIENT
Confidential
CONTRACTOR
Added Dimensions / Richard Hazboun
PHOTOGRAPHER
Anice Hoachlander

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The conversion of a defunct dairy farm into a single-family house in rural Virginia was surprisingly simple. Cattle pens became living, dining and kitchen. The upper feed loft became bedrooms. A new stair connects the two, replacing the former ladder. The manure pit and silage chute became a screened porch. The barnyard was repurposed as a courtyard with a pool. On the exterior, the original massing and materials were retained to the degree possible. New materials were selected for their informality and ease of use. All in all, easily done.

JURY
“It preserves the essential qualities of an historic farm, while adapting it for a new use as a residence. The pool in the center of the farmyard ties the composition together to make a gathering place.”

The AIA Potomac Valley Excellence in Design Awards Competition is designed to encourage and recognize distinguished architectural achievement; to honor the architectural team, their clients and consultants who work together to improve the built environment; to demonstrate the breadth of services architects provide; and to raise public consciousness of the Architect’s role in shaping the quality of life through design excellence. The awards program recognizes excellence in design and planning. Consequently, the awards program honors the full range of quality work completed or designed by eligible members of the AIA Potomac Valley Chapter and AIA Members from other chapters for work located in AIAPV's region.

AIA Potomac Valley provides leadership, communication, education, and advocacy in support of architects and their constituencies in the Potomac Valley region. We empower members to advance their roles in service to society; act as a collective voice to help cultivate the future of the architectural profession; foster innovation and sustainability in design; and are a knowledge resource to members and the public, raising awareness of the value of the architecture profession. The chapter serves roughly 700 members in Allegany, Charles, Frederick, Garrett, Montgomery, Prince George’s and Washington counties in Maryland.

Our charitable arm, the Potomac Valley Architecture Foundation, promotes architectural education, training and research, and public awareness of the field of architecture.
