PROJECT Clerestory House
LOCATION Somerset, Maryland
ARCHITECT Colleen Healey Architecture, LLC
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN TEAM Colleen Healey, AIA
OWNER/CLIENT Confidential
CONTRACTOR Llaveroes Services LLC / Abel A Canizalez
PHOTOGRAPHER Brian Wetzel Photography
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Daylit and simple in form, Clerestory House is the renovation of an existing 1950’s split-level. A low-pitch roof was removed and replaced with a full elevation band of clerestory windows. Above the new windows, a new flat roof was added. Punctuated by skylights and providing a thick insulation package, this roof swap allowed for an open plan beneath, while the new clerestory enhances the interior’s natural lighting while maintaining its privacy to the street.
JURY
“When the jury deliberated about which residential project was deserving of Gold, this was the first thought, and the jury was in complete consensus. It is amazing what a new hat will do for an old house. It is brilliant!” –Jeffrey Huber

CONTRACTOR Square One Development Group, LLC / Steve Howard
PHOTOGRAPHER StudioHDP / Anice Hoachlander, Architectural Photographer Photo by Hoachlander Davis Photography
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The architect was tasked with designing an addition to one of the most recognizable modern residential projects in the DC metro area, designed by a renowned local architect. The addition’s program includes a carport and garage, a moss garden, the conversion of an existing garage into a new dining room, and a separate lower-level artist’s studio and spa. The garden is the nexus between the original house, the dining room, and the carport. The program was a reaction to the pandemic, addressing the client's need for exterior social gathering spaces.

This flexible performance, education, and event venue fulfills a decades-long vision of the community to build a performing arts facility in Garrett County. Providing a gateway to the campus, the Performing Arts Center transforms an existing gymnasium into a 450-seat proscenium theater, adding a flexible recital hall as well as amenities for patrons, staff, students, and performers. The design links the campus with the community while implementing sustainable design strategies, targeting LEED Silver certification.
JURY
“The jury chose this project to be awarded based on the development team’s longtime effort to bring a cultural facility to the community. In addition, for being an adaptive reuse project and for site planning strategies. The new building form planning completes the receiving/arrival courtyard space. Placing the breakout and pre-function spaces facing the open lawn resulted as a welcoming gesture and enhances anticipation to a main event in the evening. For its contribution to expand the cultural exposure, providing a place of gathering, consideration of building upon existing facilities [re-use] and incorporating sustainable solutions, the jury felt this project is deserving of an Honor Award.” –Jose Lobo

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A retirement gift between husband and wife gave each what they wanted. For her, a slight addition opened the house to the yard, allowing outdoor entertaining. For him, two studios — for painting and woodworking — provided room for passions that had outgrown the house. For both, a garden in between, designed by the landscape architects, who organized the site with the two additions in mind even before an architect was on board. We framed the garden.
JURY
“This submission checks all the boxes. The design is very well articulated and presented. Attention to existing site conditions and sustainable green strategies go above and beyond. There is a distinct language of each structure that adds to the beauty of this project. They work together and complement each other. As if to form a wonderful, implied dialogue across the site. Nature flows effortlessly and fluidly to and through both structures as the deliberate connection between indoors and outdoors is immediately apparent.
This project is a beautiful transformation whose concept of connected individuality is wonderfully done. The designers’ attention to detail, careful consideration of orientation, and methodical re-use of existing materials all add to the high appreciation of the final product. And while “His” is very different from “Hers” in a way, they both celebrate the importance of individual expression while providing very intimate as well as public opportunities for connection.” –Anson Stuart

“This project, located on a historic site with a deep rich history, stood out for many reasons. First, the level of community engagement is significant and commendable. The use of local artists as collaborators in the design process provides real community buy-in and credibility, not to mention meaningful social equity. The idea of the project serving as a beacon of hope, carries through in both literal and figurative ways. The highlighted stair towers, sensitivity to user populations and careful placement of key programmatic elements all help to bolster this major central idea. [NP] This project tackles very difficult societal ills in a cohesive, well thought out way. It merges and orchestrates a delicate balance of some of our most vulnerable user groups in a facility that seems to understand the importance of public/private and needed interactions/scheduled solitude. It is a beautiful transformation that works both functionally and aesthetically.” –Anson Stuart

CONTRACTOR Shay Gallo Construction / Shay Gallo

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This ocean-front getaway employs a sawtooth form capturing ocean views and dawn’s first light while addressing DNEC’s slope requirement. From that initial glimmer, light floods the top floor and is keyholed deep into the home down a central stairway. Peeking under the home’s raised first floor, fins and dune-fencing are viewed together. At the point of arrival, one discovers that dune-fencing, an environmental manmade element animates the interior and manages solar heat gain on its facade.
JURY
“This project was one the Jury’s favorite Residential Projects, all around comments mentioned the success of this solution. The privacy screen provides an interactive element that allows animation with sunlight on its interiors and a colorful contrast when the artificial light comes on. The light and sober use of materials, screening elements and frames, provides a serene space for enjoying the views of the ocean. Great consideration was taken in handling exposure. Allowing the context to coexist even under the house by its light supports also helps with not impacting the ecosystem. The jury chose this one as one of the most impacting projects and deserving of a Merit award.” –Jose Lobo

The project is an adaptive re-use of an early 20th century cinderblock garage. It is located in Brookeville, Maryland, a town on the National Register of Historic Places. There have been three adaptive re-uses for the building since the property last changed hands. Phase one was a transformation into an architecture studio, second an Accessory Dwelling Unit and currently a cottage with a music studio in the main space. Historic reviews and permitting for the additions to the original structure were a challenge.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Kentlands Market Square presents a series of strategic, place-based interventions intended to re-position and prime a conventional, surface-parked retail center for the ‘successional urbanism’ originally envisioned by the original Kentlands master plan—intended to increase the diversity of land uses, improve walkability, and promote vibrant street life and community identity over time. The project demonstrates how modest but powerful design strategies can make major impacts in the evolution of the built environment and community place-making.
JURY
“What a great model for sprawl repair. As an urban design solution, this project takes on the suburban strip mall and converts it into a place for people rather than cars. This is a great strategy and approach showing that design with a scalpel rather than a hatchet can have such a totalizing effect. The future of community design will look a lot like this as we explore adaptive reuse and retrofit of automobile-oriented environments, to make places for people.” –Jeffrey Huber

This deck-style split level home was dark inside and had very few windows facing the front. The secluded nature of the site created opportunities for exposure, allowing us to blur the boundaries of the home with elements like a 15' glass door that pockets completely into the wall. Cedar siding to match the existing house was used for the addition and was paired with Cor-Ten steel to blend into the wooded site.
JURY
“This project is a beautiful and harmonious merging of human-made design and the natural world. With a strong emphasis on aesthetics and attention to detail the design created elevated interior spaces. It provides a serene and inviting living space that connects people with nature while offering modern comfort and functionality. The materials selection of cedar shake and steel evoke the feeling of being in a forested environment.” –Cristin Peacock

JURY
“Ponce was hit hard by the recent earthquake. The community is unique and anchors a strong Puerto Rican identity. This masterful master plan is impressive with the multitude of distinctive settings and urban fabric that showcase emerging lifestyles within a coastal setting. There were clear qualities of how the architecture, urban design, landscape architecture blend. Bucking the trend of tearing down first-generation homes in near-ring suburbs in favor of oversized farmhouses, this project focuses on reuse: adapting and expanding the structure of a late 1930s brick Cape Cod with an eye towards scale and proportion. Recognizing that the original house had been built with quality materials that contained both embodied energy and plenty of life left in them informed every decision from right from the outset.

With identical footprints, both schools have collaborative learning spaces but also their own character, reflecting their community.
JURY
“Special recognition should be brought to two aspects of this project. First, the use of natural daylighting to create a vibrant and conducive environment for learning. The incorporation used thoughtful design consideration and effectively transforms the learning environment promoting a successful learning outcome. The 13-story, multifamily, mixed-use tower is located on the site of a former cement plant in Southeast Washington, DC and is positioned directly between Nationals Park and the Anacostia River. This LEED Gold building accentuates its prime location, site history, and unique neighborhood through its form and materials selection.
JURY
“The solution of lifting the architecture to appear to be floating, supported with the angled pipe columns, works well to integrate and connect the plaza. This recessed podium also enhances the sense of arrival and entry to the building. The sawtooth façades provide a playful and animated display of reflection. Depending on the angle it can seem untidy to the west or formally organized to the east. The choice of materials and proportions match and complement future phases.
