2019 Emerging Leader Award Recipient
Malik Johnson-Williams, Associate AIA, Associate NOMA, Architectural designer at Page Southerland Page received the Chapter’s second annual Emerging Leader Award at Celebrate Design 2019 on Thursday, October 17 at the AMP by Strathmore.
Since 2014, Malik has been a leader in the conversation on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the built environment. In an effort to spark more diverse conversations around architecture & the built environment, Malik resurrected the University of Maryland’s student chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMAS). Since its reformation, UMD NOMAS has continued to serve as a channel for students to voice their diverse interests & perspectives in regards to architecture & design.
In 2017, Malik was the Deputy Project Architect of the University of Maryland’s entry in the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. Inspired by traditional principles of Native American living combined with cutting edge building technology, UM. Over the course of two years, he led a multidisciplinary team of students, to design and build a fully functioning, net-zero inspired home. Team Maryland’s entry, entitled reACT, ultimately placed second overall in the international competition and securely established the University of Maryland as the most awarded university in the competition’s history.
Since his graduation in May 2019, Malik has continued his interest in promoting diversity in the field of design by serving as the University Liaison to the District of Columbia chapter of the National Organization for Minority Architects. Outside of the architecture, Malik spends his free time woodworking in his home workshop/studio and volunteering as a children’s meditation instructor.
