Description:

This building combines a new Wheaton Library and a new Wheaton Community Recreation Center in one building from the previous two sites (one for each). Creative use of shared spaces reduces the overall building size, which allows for reuse of the original sites. Site issues included impacts to the adjacent residential neighborhood by relocating existing roads and access, determining how to manage stormwater, and preparing concept layouts for the building and parking on the new combined site.

1.5 LU/HSW

Learning Objectives:

  1. To expose architects and design professionals to design concepts and styles that allow one new building to be designed and built on two existing sites, combining elements of both previous buildings into a more compact, environmentally friendly footprint while leaving portions of the previous sites for new uses.
  2. Attendees will learn design techniques that will result in a healthier and safer ecosystem, such as managing stormwater through vegetative roof systems, maximizing the use of natural light, specifying non-toxic and non-polluting construction materials, harvesting renewable energy, reducing impervious surfaces, etc.
  3. Attendees will learn how a sensitively designed facility can contribute to the emotional, psychological, and physical well-being of the surrounding community by creating a multi-use, beautiful building that has become a magnet for community use.
  4. Attendees will learn how the purpose and mission of an organization’s home can be conveyed by design features that reflect these same values and the sense of the community they serve through the fusion of new and old (including finding a way to bring back the used book store run by Friends of the Library).
  5. Attendees will learn challenges and successful techniques for working with municipal authorities and community members in developing design concepts and completing construction.
