AWARD GOLD/HONOR ─ Multi-Family Architecture
PROJECT John and Jill Ker Conway Residence
LOCATION Washington, District of Columbia
ARCHITECT DLR Group
OWNER/CLIENT Community Solutions International, Inc. and McCormack Baron Salazar
CONTRACTOR GCS-SIGAL, LLC
PHOTOGRAPHER Robert Benson Photography
JURY
This building is elegant, dramatic, welcoming, but also raises the issue of homeless veteran conditions to a place where we can gather around it as a community. There's a sense of pride that doesn't hide behind any curtains and make a statement that this is an issue that is solvable with great architecture. Beyond that message, it's a compellingly beautiful space. It's great to see such high quality design used for such a high public good. The jury can't say enough good things about this project!

This is a great example of reimagining an existing warehouse district, creating airy public spaces and new entrances. We appreciated the rough and ready tectonic detailing of the interiors and lightness of the top floor addition.

JURY
The jury really loved this project in its simplicity. Restraint in design is one of the most fundamentally difficult things to do and this project exemplifies that approach. Simple materials placed beautifully almost like a little village. We love the way the buildings meet the ground. The interior composition is very elegant. It doesn't try to do too much, but is very rich and well done.

The jury thought this was a really refreshing project - simple and understated, rich in palette. It has clean, light-filled interiors but doesn't feel sparse. The building feels good on the landscape itself. The massing is very pleasing and gives it a certain gravitas.

The jury thought this was a beautiful, contemplative house, sensitive to the marsh environment, with an interesting transformation from the front of house to the back. It's understated, and lets the landscape really enter the house.

CONTRACTOR Marion Construction
PHOTOGRAPHER Sam Kittner
JURY
The jury felt this was a refreshing approach to contextual placement, with the extraordinary idea of incorporating a library into a mall. This adaptive reuse of the mall is a wonderful urban idea. The design is very playful and the architects did quite a bit with a limited budget. Breaking down barriers between commerce and community in one building is a notable achievement.

AWARD MERIT ─ Institutional Architecture
PROJECT Tucker Hall, College of William & Mary
LOCATION Williamsburg, Virginia
ARCHITECT Cunningham | Quill Architects
OWNER/CLIENT The College of William & Mary
CONTRACTOR Donley's
PHOTOGRAPHER Chris Cunningham
JURY
This is a thoughtful and colorful reimagining of an old building. It does a nice job of creating more moments and spaces for reading and community in a building that had been closed off into little pieces. To be able to retain the character of historic structures without destroying them with modern amenities is a difficult task to accomplish. The architects achieved it here.

CONTRACTOR Turner Construction Company
PHOTOGRAPHER Alan Karchmer
JURY
The linkage between the new addition and the existing building is delicately handled, the way the gap frames the tower and joins the two masses. The architects got a lot of mileage with limited resources.

This project is very elegant in its placement in the landscape. The lifting and cantilevering of the single mass made the building feel light and airy. Gorgeous staircase detail and the simple interior palette complemented the composition of the project.

JURY
Although this is an addition, it provided its own compositional strategies, with very rich and exuberant interior spaces. It's an achievement to orchestrate this many materials this well. Rather than creating a burden to the site, the addition is placed in such a way that enhances the site and its natural attributes.

For a small project, it shows the ability of architecture to deal with everything from the details to the landscape without being overwhelming. It's a very comprehensive project that belies its scale. It typifies the idea that good things come in small packages.
