The dynamic image of a Purple Line rail car speeding through the Silver Spring Library site convinced an independent jury to choose the library for the Montgomery County Planning Department’s 2016 Design Excellence Award. According to the jury, the project expresses civic monumentality through large architectural gestures and integration of public transportation, and underscores the growing importance of design excellence as urban infill, rather than greenfield development, becomes more prevalent in Montgomery County.

Co-Hosted by AIA Potomac Valley and the Montgomery County Planning Department

Presenter: Bill Evans, RRMM Lukmire Architects

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the sustainable strategies employed, targeting a LEED GOLD rating.
  2. Identify the various programs successfully incorporated into the building and site design: such as a childrens’ level, a coffee bar, and space for prominent space for a non-profit arts group.
  3. Learn about resolving issues of incorporating transit (the Purple Line Station) into the site.
  4. Learn how the architecture responds to the urban setting in a way that enhances the downtown and the associated engineering challenges.
