Course Description

Architects are trained as generalists, and the type of projects undertaken by a firm can vary extensively from year to year. Our intentionally-small firm established itself largely through residential design, but, over the years, have designed a variety of other project types — church, theater, restaurant, commercial, non-profit, recreational — at a variety of scales. Our residential work taught us to think of each project as intensely specific to its particular client, and we have successfully carried that over to our larger projects. We will discuss how these skills have translated to allow us to expand into public work and to produce better design outcome in our public work, and how initially thinking about the specific client, rather than the building type, can open up a new range of design possibilities.

Learning Objectives

  1. Examine alternative ways to analyze client goals and priorities to establish the initial foundation of the design.
  2. Identify opportunities to expand a residential practice to include a variety of building and project types.
  3. Demonstrate how established design excellence and client interaction can be successfully maintained and replicated at a variety of scales.
  4. Review unexpected challenges encountered while translating the firm’s design sensibilities to public work.
