Join us for a tour of this 2012 AIA Potomac Valley Design Award recipient. The recently completed Petworth campus of E.L. Haynes, a two-campus charter school in Washington, DC, consists of a five-story building of nearly 50,000 square feet situated on a compact urban site. This campus accommodates a fourth- through eighth-grade educational program. The primary design concept centers around massing and materials that reflect the bustling activity on the inside while creating a strong street presence and identity on the outside. Multiple sustainable design elements include a building envelope designed to be durable and well insulated and to work with mechanical systems designed to be as energy-efficient as possible. The school’s prominent neighborhood presence has helped spark urban renewal and development within the surrounding area of Petworth.
Architect Milton Shinberg will conduct a tour and elaborate on the design and construction process, together with Julie Green, Chief Marketing and Development Officer at E.L. Haynes, who was involved in the planning and construction of the project.
